Why “white” products are unhealthy...
When whole wheat is milled to produce white flour, the majority of essential vitamins and trace elements are lost or destroyed. The journey from whole, brown rice to white rice is much the same. Ditto when sugar cane is turned into white sugar! These essential nutrients are discarded (fed to the animals) but surprise, surprise, they aren’t there by accident - they’re the ones that Nature designed for proper breakdown of the food.
The B-complex vitamins have many important functions during reproduction, but only 23 per cent of the vitamin B1, which is present in whole wheat, is retained in white flour after milling. Only 20 per cent of vitamin B2 is retained, only 19 per cent of vitamin B3, only 50 per cent of vitamin B5, only 29 per cent of vitamin B6 and only 33 per cent of folic acid.
Zinc is an essential trace element with similarly important functions during pregnancy, but most zinc is lost from food during refining processes (78 per cent of zinc is removed when we refine flour, 98 per cent is lost in the production of refined sugar).
